Let’s begin our journey on day 2 of Juliana trail. This stage follows the marked, well-kept Soča Trail and leads almost continuously along the emerald green Soča River and at the same time through the part of the unspoilt Triglav National Park. At the suspension bridge over the Kršovec gorge on the border of the Triglav National park, the route continues towards Vodenca, crossing the confluence of the Soča and Koritnica rivers and reaching Bovec soon afterwards.
The narrow Trenta Valley, through which the emerald Soča River flows, widens out and enthrals with its typical grassy areas and farms. Attractive campsites invite hikers and visitors to relax. In this section, the Alpe Adria Trail coincides with the Soča Trail which leads along the Soča River, crossing it from time to time, until the Trenta Valley widens into the Bovec Basin. Now the trail leads into the centre of Bovec situated at the foot of the mighty Mt. Rombon and Mt. Kanin. Bovec was first mentioned 1174, but the moving history of this attractive place extends much further back. Along this section of the trail, largely running through the Triglav National Park, there are numerous resting places with descriptions of attractions. On your way you can also taste and buy the famous Bovec cheese.

Day 3: Juliana Trail: Bovec to Drežnica
A large part of this picturesque stage runs along the left bank of the River Soča, before turning away from the river towards the end of this stage. The route then leads up to the delightful village of Drežnica above Kobarid.
Our hike takes us past the romantic Virje waterfall to the magical world of Narnia: The Bovec Valley, a natural and cultural heritage, once served as the setting for part of the Walt Disney film “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian”. Near the majestic Boka waterfall, hundreds of cubic metres of water dash deep into the valley from a height of 106 meters. Then we follow the emerald river Soča, on which keen canoeists and rafters take it in turns to tackle the rapids, around the Polovnik Mountain. After a slight ascent we reach the mountain village of Drežnica, below the Krn mountain where we overnight.

Hike: Distance: 14.1 mi, duration 7:30h; elevation +1541 ft, - 2939ft
Day 4: Alpe Adria trail: Drežnica - Tolmin
This stage is steeped in history – on former military paths and across the Alpine meadows of the Triglav National Park – and combines memories of the First World War with the traditional way of life of the inhabitants of this region. At the end of this stretch, the route descends again to the River Soča, before reaching the town of Tolmin.
The stage from Drežnica to Tolmin leads through two wonderful small mountain villages and finishes in Tolmin, the administrative centre of the Soča Valley. Drežnica is an active and lively village, a centre for parachute jumping and the starting point for hikes. And it is famous not least for its old Carnival custom dating back thousands of years. Top level concerts are held from time to time in the parish church, and you will be accompanied along the trail by sculptures from all over the world, known as “Forma Viva”.
In the village of Krn life runs at a slower pace, there are fewer young families, and the residents go about earning their daily bread in the valley. At the edge of the village is the room set up in memory of the famous historian Simon Rutar. A little lower down, the neighboring village of Vrsno was the birthplace of one of the most popular Slovenian poets, Simon Gregorčič. The long sloping meadows above the village are scattered with Alpine pastures which even today still tell of the past struggle for existence.
This stage ends in Tolmin, a friendly little town situated on the sunny terrace above the confluence of the Soča and Tolminka rivers. The bustle in the town, the traffic, businesses, shops and offices, infrastructure and restaurants create a picture which is more like our everyday life than the temperate pace of life in the mountains.
And of course, there are also many spots and attractions to delight hikers along the trail itself. After the strenuous ascent from Drežnica you can enjoy a rest on the Planica at the Italian military chapel dating from the First World War. The through sunny Alpine meadows beneath the Krn massif will once again take you briefly through the Triglav National Park. Before Tolmin the trail will once again lead you to the emerald beauty of the River Soča, which will take you to the well-earned end point of this stage.
